Sulfo-DIBMA is an electroneutral modification of existing DIBMAs. It does not interfere with charge-sensitive interactions between proteins and lipids. This innovation opens up a wider range of experimental research in terms of charge-sensitive membrane protein processes like protein-protein and protein-lipid interactions. In addition, Sulfo-DIBMA belongs to a new generation of DIBMA’s which are RAFT polymerized. This achieves a reduction in both monomer size and greater monodispersity. With diisobutylene-maleic acid (DIBMA), you can directly extract membrane proteins from cells without an intermediate step of detergent solubilization, like with SDS, which would usually interfere with the protein's function. Another advantage of DIBMA is the lack of an absorbance maxima at 280 nm. SMAs, in comparison, usually interfere with protein quantification, as aromatic amino acids absorb at the same spectrum.
Another significant advantage of Sulfo polymers compared to other polymers is the wide pH range in which they remain stable. The buffer in which the polymer is supplied has a pH of 7.5, but the polymer itself remains stable between pH 4 and pH 10. The special physicochemical properties of Sulfo-DIBMAs make them ideal for cryo-TEM and other downstream applications.

MES is a zwitterionic buffer. One of the "Good" buffers developed for biological applications. It has the advantages of maximum water solubility and minimum solubility in all other solvents, minimal salt effects, minimal change in pK with temperature, chemically and enzymatically stable, minimal absorption in visible or UV spectral range.
A buffer using MES free acid can be prepared by titrating the free acid with sodium hydroxide to the desired pH (pKa ± 1). Alternatively, volumes of equimolar MES free acid and sodium or potassium MES can be mixed to attain the desired pH.

Glucose oxidase is an FAD-containing glycoprotein. The enzyme is specific for β-D-glucose. O can be replaced by hydrogen acceptors such as 2,6-dichlorophenol indophenol. Glucose oxidase from Aspergillus niger is a dimer consisting of 2 equal subunits with a molecular mass of 80 kDa each. Each subunit contains one flavin adenine dinulceotide moiety and one iron. The enzyme is a glycoprotein containing ~16% neutral sugar and 2% amino sugars. The enzyme also contains 3 cysteine residues and 8 potential sites for N-linked glycosylation. Glucose oxidase is capable of oxidizing D-aldohexoses, monodeoxy-D-glucoses, and methyl-D-glucoses at varying rates. Glucose oxidase does not require any activators, but it is inhibited by Ag+, Hg2+, Cu2+, phenylmercuric acetate, and p-chloromercuribenzoate. It is not inhibited by the nonmetallic SH reagents: N-ethylmaleimide, iodoacetate, and iodoacetamide.
