Students perform screening procedures for waterborne bacteria in drinking water. Using a single PCR reaction, they test for the presence of three separate and classroom-safe microorganisms.

The kit has enough material for ten experiments with 20 students.

Ordering information: This kit includes primer mixtures; 200 base pair ladder; control DNAs; non-pathogenic E. coli, B. subtilis, and S. marcescens; chelating agent; proteinase k; PCR beads (taq polymerase, dNTPS, buffer); ultrapure H20; TE buffer; 10X gel loading solution; InstaStain Ethidium Bromide; InstaStain Methylene Blue; micro test tubes with attached caps; and instructions with background information. It requires but does not include thermal cycler, water baths, or heating baths for PCR; horizontal gel electrophoresis apparatus; DC power supply; micropipettors with tips; balance; 500 mL flask; microcentrifuge; UV transilluminator or white light; and a microwave.
