Using the Winkler method with the materials included in this lab activity, students measure and analyze dissolved oxygen concentration in samples to determine biological oxygen demand and calculate primary productivity as a function of light intensity. Includes instructions on water sampling, an illustrated section to help identify aquatic organisms, and extensive background information on topics such as oxygen and water, primary productivity, oxygen cycle, photosynthesis, the carbon cycle, and more. To collect your own water sample, you will need a water sampler, available separately. If a collected water sample is not available, an algae culture is included.
