The wipes also prevent scratching or scuffing of the image area. They allow for quick roll up and increased water receptivity in the non-image areas, reducing scumming and halftone plugging and requiring less water, particularly at startup.

Gum arabic, an acidic water-soluble gum from the acacia tree, adheres to the metal surface or plate and protects the non-image areas from oxidation, scratches, grease, and dirt. These cheesecloth wipes are excellent for buffing gummed plates to a dry, smooth, and streak-free finish with no linting or residue.
