In this simulated RT-PCR experiment, students will explore the diagnostic test used worldwide to diagnose and monitor the spread of COVID-19.

  • This kit includes enough materials for 25 students in 5 groups
  • Time required: Set up - 30 minutes; PCR - 2 hours or overnight; Electrophoresis - 45 minutes

Reverse-transcription PCR (RT-PCR) is the gold standard for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 due to the sensitivity, specificity, and feasibility of the test.

 : Materials required but not included: DNA Electrophoresis, Thermal Cycler, Micropipettes: 5- to 50 µl, UV or Blue Light Transilluminator, White Light Box (optional - use if staining with FlashBlue™), Microcentrifuge and microwave or hot plate.

Materials included: Instructions, PCR EdvoBeads™, LyphoPrimer™ Mix, EdvoQuick™ DNA Ladder, DNA Templates, TE Buffer, UltraSpec-Agarose™, TBE Electrophoresis Buffer powder, SYBR® Safe Stain, FlashBlue™ DNA Stain, Microcentrifuge and PCR Tubes.
