Avidin can be used in ELISAs, immunohistochemical staining, Western blotting, hybridization, affinity chromatography, and fluorescent-activated cell sorting. The streptavidin conjugates are recommended for use where high binding affinity and specificity is required. NeutrAvidin® biotin-binding protein is a more economical alternative to both avidin and streptavidin. It features low nonspecific binding properties with no glycosylation. It also offers a neutral pI and lysine residues that remain available for derivatization or conjugation.
