Phenol
Phenol (C₆H₆O) is an aromatic organic compound with mildly acidic and antiseptic properties. It appears as a crystalline solid that liquefies slightly above room temperature and is highly soluble in organic solvents. Phenol is widely used in laboratories as a reagent for protein and nucleic acid extraction and in chemical synthesis for the production of resins, plastics, and pharmaceuticals. Furthermore it is used as phenol–chloroform extraction to isolate DNA, RNA, and proteins from biological samples. Due to its corrosive and toxic nature, phenol must be handled under proper ventilation with suitable protective equipment.
