Phytohemagglutinin lectin is isolated from red kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). This product is a partially purified product consisting of a mixture of isolectins. PHA will agglutinate erythrocytes of all human blood groups and many mammal.

- It shows agglutination when tested with human red blood cells
It is used as a mitogen to trigger T-lymphocytes cell division and to activate latent HIV-1 from human peripheral lymphocytes. The lectin has a number of effects on cell metabolism, it induces mitosis, and affects the cell membrane in regard to transport and permeability to proteins. It is used as positive control in ELIspot assay.
