Easy-to-use unit provides 'controlled rate' freezing samples at approximately −1 °C per minute, which is needed to prevent lethal intracellular freezing and successful cryopreservation. Prior to inserting vials, the unit should be filled with 250 ml of 100% isopropyl alcohol. Once the samples have been inserted the unit should be placed in a −80 °C mechanical freezer.
