Osmium tetroxide is also referred to as osmium and is mainly used as a secondary fixative of tissues. The molecule reacts with lipid moieties and is responsible for the oxidation of unsaturated bonds of fatty acids. This reaction adds density and contrast to biological samples. In normal tissues, presence of osmium results in intense black staining which can be viewed by normal eye. In addition, it can be used as a mordant (a molecule which combines with stain or dye at later stages) in electron microscopy, thereby enhancing lead staining.

3,3′-Diaminobenzidine has been used as a chromogen for the visualisation in immunohistochemistry of chondrosarcoma sections, mammary carcinomas and brain tissue sections. Peroxidase substrate; reagent for spectrophotometric determination of selenium. DAB (3,3′-Diaminobenzidine) is utilized in many applications for the visualisation of peroxidase activity. In the peroxidase reaction, DAB serves as a hydrogen donor in the presence of peroxide. Phloroglucinol (phlo) is a phenol derivative that shows a cytoprotective effect from oxidative damage by enhancing the activity of cellular catalase. It can also be used to prepare synthetic analogs of A-type proanthocyanidins (PACs) such as 2,8-dioxabicyclo nonane derivatives by reacting with the corresponding flavylium salts. Phlo can react with benzaldehyde derivatives to form phloroglucinol-based microporous polymeric organic frameworks (phlo-POF) with potential applications in ion exchange and gas adsorption.
