Carmine, also known as cochineal or crimson lake, is a red colored pigment obtained from the aluminum salt of carminic acid. It is used in artificial flowers, paints and coloring. Ungraded products supplied by Spectrum are indicative of a grade suitable for general industrial use or research purposes and typically are not suitable for human consumption or therapeutic use.

Soluble in ethanol, alkali hydroxides, borax (0,8 mg/ ml), ammonium hydroxide (1 mg/ml), water (8 mg/ml) or ethanol (0,8 mg/ml). The addition of an acid or base can help increase the water solubility. Partly soluble in hot water; practically insoluble in cold water (8 mg/ ml) or dilute acids.
