Bad, som rutinmässigt används i mikrobiologilaboratorier, skapar specifika förhållanden för att inkubera prover som inte kan utsättas för öppen låga. Antingen analoga eller digitala kontroller ställer in den konstanta temperaturen samt omrörning eller skakning av ytterligare driftsmekanismer. Vanligtvis används vatten för att försiktigt applicera värme på de inneslutna proverna, men olja och pärlor används också när förhöjda temperaturer eller effektivare metoder krävs. Baden kan ha lock för att förhindra att värme läcker ut och förhindra kontaminering utifrån.
