Buffertar skyddar prover mot pH-förändringar när syror eller alkalier tillsätts. Pulver- och flytande former spårar effektivt proteiner under elektroforesisolering och separation. Saltbuffertarna kan också användas för att kalibrera och standardisera pH-mätare för noggranna avläsningar.
