Buffertar skyddar prover mot pH-förändringar när syror eller alkalier tillsätts. Pulver- och flytande former spårar effektivt proteiner under elektroforesisolering och separation. Saltbuffertarna kan också användas för att kalibrera och standardisera pH-mätare för noggranna avläsningar. Blockerande ämnen hindrar antikroppar från att fästa vid membranfria platser som skulle kunna producera en störande bakgrund. Buffertarna finns i olika koncentrationer för att passa alla behov och kan komma i flytande eller dehydrerade format.
