Genom att skapa en vakuumtät försegling i laboratorieutrustning skyddar silikonpropparna innehållna lösningar och medier från att påverkas av yttre faktorer. Den kemiskt neutrala konstruktionen är kompatibel även med abrasiva arbetslösningsmedel. Eftersom materialet dessutom är karakteristiskt motståndskraftigt mot extrema temperaturer motstår förslutningarna sprickbildning vid uppvärmningsprocedurer och är autoklaverbara för återanvändning. Silikonproppar har en avsmalnande botten i olika diameterstorlekar för att passa alla kärl.
