Kemikalier för användning i mikroskopi levereras som färdigberedda buffertar som är praktiskt förpackade och framställda färska för varje beställning. Förberedda mikroskopibuffertar är ekonomiska och tidsbesparande. Inom elektronmikroskopi föredrar många fosfatbuffertar, delvis på grund av deras avsaknad av toxicitet jämfört med den näst vanligaste bufferten, natriumkakodylat. Fosfatbuffertar används bäst vid fysiologiskt pH eller i en något alkalisk formulering.
