For immunohistochemistry applications, sheep serum is frequently used as a blocking solution. Using sheep serum is useful for blocking the background cross reactivity with immunoglobulins which are already present in the tissue. When used before application of the primary antibody, sheep serum can eliminate Fc receptor binding of the primary and secondary antibody.

Phenol red is used as a pH indicator in cell culture. Its colour exhibits a gradual transition from yellow to red over the pH range 6,8 to 8,2. Above pH 8,2, phenol red turns a bright pink (fuchsia) colour.

Bovine serum albumin (BSA) is commonly used in cell culture protocols, particularly where protein supplementation is necessary and the other components of serum are unwanted. In cell culture, its main role is as a carrier of small molecules. Because of its negative charge, BSA binds water, salts, fatty acids, vitamins and hormones, then carries these bound components between tissues and cells. The binding capacity also makes BSA an effective scavenger to remove toxic substances, including pyrogens, from the medium.

Newborn Calf Serum (NBCS) originates from 3 to 10 day old calves. It is a high quality, cost effective replacement for Foetal Bovine Serum (FBS) and contains a somewhat higher proportion of proteins and immunoglobulin, but fewer growth factors. With proper cell adaptation, it has been shown to perform very well in cell culture applications where routine cell growth and cell culture maintenance is the objective.
