Studies have shown that ferritin iron incorporation is mediated by a ferroxidase activity associated with ferritin H subunits and a nucleation center associated with ferritin L subunits. MES is a zwitterionic buffer. One of the "Good" buffers developed for biological applications. It has the advantages of maximum water solubility and minimum solubility in all other solvents, minimal salt effects, minimal change in pK with temperature, chemically and enzymatically stable, minimal absorption in visible or UV spectral range.
A buffer using MES free acid can be prepared by titrating the free acid with sodium hydroxide to the desired pH (pKa ± 1). Alternatively, volumes of equimolar MES free acid and sodium or potassium MES can be mixed to attain the desired pH.

Citric acid is a key metabolic intermediate. Citrate is the starting point of the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Its concentration also coordinates several other metabolic pathways. Citric acid can form complexes with various cations, particularly with iron and calcium. In animals, citric acid improves the utilization of nutritional calcium. Citric acid is produced commercially by fermentation of carbohydrates derived from corn starch and from beet molasses.
Citric Acid, Trisodium Salt, Dihydrate is used as a substrate for citrate lyase, a buffer component; an anticoagulant. For anticoagulation use it is typically used at a concentration of approximately 0.129 M (i.e. for 4.5 mL blood use 16.0 mg sodium citrate and 2.1 mg citric acid).
To make a sodium citrate buffer use equimolar concentrations (typically approximately 0.05 M concentration) of citric acid, free acid and sodium citrate. Add equal volumes of each solution and titrate to the desired pH.

Sodium chloride is a commonly used chemical which is found widely in nature. It is considered to be an essential nutrient. Excess amounts of sodium chloride can destroy electrolyte balance and cause death in most animals, including humans.
Sodium chloride is used in a wide variety of biochemical applications, including intravenous fluids (normal saline is 0.9% w/v in water), density gradients, a diluent to increase ionic strength in buffers or culture media and in salt-out procedures in the isolation of DNA. Glutaraldehyde is a bifunctional protein cross-linking reagent, reacting with NH2 groups to form Schiff's bases.
Sporicidal agent. Glutaraldehyde reacts through cross-linking to impart water resistance to protein and polyhydroxy compounds. It is also a reducing agent for photochemicals. In organic syntheses, the reactive carbonyl groups of glutaraldehyde suggest its use as an intermediate for the production of resins, dyestuffs, and pharmaceuticals. Glutaraldehyde is a disinfectant, which is rapidly effective against vegetative forms of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is also effective against acid-fast bacteria, bacterial spores, some fungi and viruses, including hepatitis B virus and human immunodeficiency virus. It can also be used for stabilization of proteins on agarose beads, activation of polystyrene and glass for immobilization of antibodies and antigens, and coupling peptides onto carrier proteins. Can be used for preparing emulsions for making photographic film. Also for use as an electron microscopy fixative or cell fixation.

Ciprofloxacin is a fluorinated quinolone antibacterial agent which is highly effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria and mycoplasma.
Ciprofloxacin is most commonly used to treat infections of the skin, bone, sinus, lung, abdomen, and bladder. It can also be used to treat some sexually transmitted infections. Additionally, ciprofloxacin can be used after exposure to inhalation anthrax to reduce the chance of developing an infection.
During the proliferation phase of a bacterium a segmental twisting and untwisting of the chromosomes take place. An enzyme called DNA gyrase plays a decisive part in this process. Ciprofloxacin inhibits this DNA gyrase in a way that arrests the bacterial metabolism, since vital information can no longer be read from the bacterial chromosome. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a condensation polymer of ethylene oxide and water. PEGs are susceptible to oxidative degradation in the presence of air. Minimizing the exposure of PEG to elevated temperatures and/or exposure to oxygen, or addition of an antioxidant can limit the amount of degradation. PEGs do not hydrolyze or deteriorate upon storage. PEGs do not support the growth of molds. PEG is incompatible with phenol and may reduce the antimicrobial action of other preservatives.

Trichloroacetic acid is an acetic acid analogue commonly used to precipitate proteins, DNA and RNA. In the presence of SDS Trichloroacetic acid will precipitate proteins which can then be quantified by the Lowry method. The compound has also found uses as a decalcifier and fixative in microscopy, in protein sequencing, detecting albumin and organic synthesis.
Trichloroacetic acid is used in protein precipitation; has been used to determine protein concentration by quantitative precipitation. It is also used as a decalcifier and fixative in microscopy. A protocol for the precipitation of nucleic acids can be found in Molecular Cloning. Rats exposed to chronic sublethal amounts of trichloroacetic acid displayed an increase in serum bilirubin with a decrease in hematological proteins and cholesterols along with significant decreases in red blood corpuscles, mean cell volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, hemoglobin and hematocrit. In mice the production of liver tumors was associated to Trichloroacetic acid, which is also a known mouse hepatocarinogen. On the guinea pig trichloroacetic acid was observed to be a mild alergen on the skin.

Fibrinogen is a blood protein that is involved in clotting and is converted to fibrin by thrombin. Fibrinogen has an approximate molecular weight of 340 kDa. It consists of three non-identical pairs of disulfidebonded chains. The α-chain has an approximate molecular weight of 63.5 kDa, the β-chain 56 kDa, and the γ-chain 47 kDa. At the amino termini, the three chains are connected in a dimeric disulfide knot (DSK). A second DSK occurs later in the molecule. Fibrinogen has approximately 4% carbohydrate content.
