This colourless liquid is the simplest organic nitrile (hydrogen cyanide is a simpler nitrile, but the cyanide anion is not classed as organic). It is produced mainly as a byproduct of acrylonitrile manufacture.
Acetonitrile is widely used as a polar aprotic solvent in organic synthesis and in the purification of butadiene in refineries.
This solvent is often the preferred choice as a mobile phase in HPLC for a variety of reasons. Not only is it miscible with water and with many other organic solvents, but it also has a lower viscosity and produces less pressure in the column than other solvents such as Methanol. The inherent low absorbance of Acetonitrile (especially HPLC grade) makes it the preferred solvent for the mobile phase of HPLC due to the reduction in the amount of noise during UV detection. Overall, Acetonitrile has many unique properties as an organic mobile phase that often result in better chromatographic peaks.
Acetonitrile also plays an important role as the main solvent used in the manufacture of DNA oligonucleotides from monomers.

The complement system provides innate defense against microbial infection and is a "complement" to antibody mediated immunity. The complement system consists of thirty-five interacting plasma and membrane associated proteins which contribute to host-defense and initiate and amplify inflammation, even in the preimmune state where specific antibodies and lymphocytes are not available. In addition to the complement components themselves, this system also contains several soluble factors that prevent spontaneous complement activation from occurring in solution, as well as, several regulatory membrane associated proteins that protect host cells from accidental complement attack. Cleavage of the C3 component by either the classical pathway or the alternative pathway releases C3a and C3b. C3a appears to be important in many inflammatory responses while the C3b fragment covalently binds to the cell or bacterial surface and plays a role in opsonisation. Binding of C3b to the C4b component of the C3 convertase, results in C5 convertase (C4b3b2a) formation.

Hygromycin B is an antibiotic substance isolated from Streptomyces hygroscopicus. Its mode of action is the inhibition of protein synthesis, by inducing the misreading of the m-RNA template in the prokaryote, (E. coli, at 100 mg/mL), lower eukaryotes (e.g., yeast, at 200 mg/mL) and higher eukaryotes (e.g., mammalian cells in culture). It selectively penetrates cells that have been rendered permeable by virus infection and combined with its potency to inhibit translation, it is an effective antiviral agent. Hygromycin B can be used as a dual-selection antibiotic when used in conjunction with G418 or Zeocin™ for cells transfected with two different vectors.

Aprotinin is found in bovine lymph nodes, lung, parotid gland, spleen, liver, pancreas, seminal vesicles, thyroid gland, kidney, mucous membranes of the trachea and esophagus, ovaries, heart, posterior pituitary and cartilage. It is a serine protease inhibitor which is reactive against trypsin, chymotrypsin, plasmatic and glandular kininogenases, plasmin, kallkrein, urokinase, clotting factor XIIa, protein C, proteinases of the complement system, leukocyte and tissue proteinases. It does not inhibit thrombin. Aprotinin works by blocking the active sites of enzymes. Binding is reversible with most aprotinin-protease complexes dissociating at pH > 10 or < 3.
