Cathepsins are a class of globular lysosomal proteases, playing a vital role in mammalian cellular turnover. They degrade polypeptides and are distinguished by their substrate specificities. Cathepsin D is the lysosomal aspartic proteinase, active in intracellular protein breakdown.
