Rosenberg and Dyer (1995) referred to the protein as ribonuclease 4 (RNase4). By PCR analysis of human/hamster somatic cell hybrids, they determined that the gene encoding the protein resides in a single exon found on human chromosome 14.By Northern analysis, mRNA for the gene was detected in human pancreas, lung, skeletal muscle, heart, kidney, and placenta, but not brain; liver represented the most abundant source. The authors noted that the mRNA encoding this ribonuclease is approximately 2 kb in length, or approximately twice as long as the mRNAs encoding other members of this gene family. They also detected a larger (approximately 2.4 kb), second transcript in hepatic, pancreatic and renal tissues. At the time of creation of this entry, 1 other protein had the name ribonuclease 4: RNS4, which is located on chromosome 1.
