Acetone
Acetone (C₃H₆O) is a volatile, flammable organic solvent and the simplest ketone, characterized by its low boiling point (56 °C), high miscibility with water, and excellent solvency for organic compounds. It is widely used in laboratory and industrial settings for degreasing, resin thinning, and as a solvent in coatings, adhesives, and pharmaceuticals. Due to its volatility and low flash point, acetone must be handled with care in well-ventilated areas, away from ignition sources.
Acetone ≥99.8%, SupraSolv® for gas chromatography, for chromatography, distilled, Supelco®
Supplier: MilliporeSigma
SupraSolv® ECD and FID is specially developed for gas chromatography in combination with ECD (Electron Capture Detetor) and FID (Flame Ionization detector). SupraSolv® solvents offer the largest specified retention time range, a clear baseline and a minimal signal-to-noise ratio, leading to reliable and reproducible analysis results. Typical applications include the determination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) in water and soil or pesticides in fruits and vegetables. Also ideal for many EPA protocols.

Acetone is a commonly used material in the manufacture of various chemicals like methyl isobutyl ketone, mesityl oxide, diacetone alcohol, acetic acid (via the ketene process), iodoform, and bromoform. Other products where acetone is utilized in manufacture include rayon, photographic films, and paint and varnish removers. In chemical synthesis, acetone has been utilized in the synthesis and isolation of both organic and inorganic compounds and complexes. These include t-butanesulfinamide, terpenes, thiol-stabilized gold colloids, calixphyrin macrocycles, and trispyrazolylborate platinum compounds. Acetone is also used in HPLC analysis of organic and inorganic species, including gold nanoparticle clusters and plant oils. Acetone has been utilized in protein crystallization.
