Dextran
Supplier: MP Biomedicals
Dextran is a high molecular weight polymer of anhydroglucose. It is composed of approximately 95% alpha-D-(1-->6) linkages. Dextrans with molecular weights greater than 10,000 behave as if they are highly branched. As the molecular weight increases, dextran molecules attain greater symmetry. Solutions of 10% dextran (MW ~40,000) exert a slightly higher colloidal osmotic pressure than plasma proteins.

Dextran, M.W. ~ 150,000, Powder
Supplier: Spectrum Chemical Mfg. Corp.
Dextran 150,000, Powder, is used as an antithrombotic in order to reduce blood viscosity. It is a complex branched glucan that is synthethized by certain lactic acid bacteria from sucrose. Commonly used in microsurgery to decrease the risk of vascular thrombosis, these agents are also used as effective osmotic agents and can treat hypovolemia. In the laboratory, Dextran is used to apply osmotic pressure to biological molecules and can, when applied with a fluorescent molecule, be used to create concentration gradients of diffusible molecules

Dextran, M.W. 200000 - 300000, white powder clinical grade
Supplier: MP Biomedicals
Dextran is a high molecular weight polymer of anhydroglucose. It is composed of approximately 95% alpha-D-(1-->6) linkages. The remaining a(1-->3) linkages account for the branching of dextran.
Dextrans are used in many applications as volume extenders, stabilizers, matrix components, binding platforms, lubricants and physical structure components.

Dextran, M.W. 60,000-90,000 clinical grade
Supplier: MP Biomedicals
Use of dextrans as long and hydrophilic spacer arms improves the performance of immobilized proteins acting on macromolecules. Dextrans are used in many applications as platelet aggregants, plasma volume extenders, osmotic pressure regulators, stabilizers, organ separation media, matrix components, copolymers, microcarriers, binding agents, viscosity modifiers, antithrombotics, lubricants and physical structure components. They may be used as long hydrophilic spacer arms to improve the performance (freedom of movement) of conjugated/bound proteins. Dextrans may be derivatized for use in biosensor systems.
Dextran is branched polysaccharide made up of linear α (1→6) linked glucose units and α (1→3) link initiated branches; it ranges in size from 10,000 to 150,000 Kd.Depending upon its molecular weight it has different uses in different fields.
