Avantor is rethinking how products and packaging are designed to reduce environmental impact without compromising performance. Our Sustainable Product and Packaging Guidelines help our teams consider sustainability across the entire product lifecycle — from material selection and manufacturing efficiency to transportation, product use and end-of-life impacts. By assessing how one design choice influences outcomes across the value chain, we’re better equipped to create solutions that align with both customer needs and environmental responsibility.

This mindset is already driving results. For example, our Masterflex^® pumps are built for longevity, with easy-to-replace parts and repair services that extend product life and reduce waste. Our MasterSense™ drives now feature firmware updates via over-the-air technology, helping customers keep devices current without replacing hardware. Our J.T.Baker^® Cell Lysis and Endonuclease and Viral Inactivation Solution are readily biodegradable to provide sustainable and scalable purification process solutions. These initiatives reflect our commitment to designing with intent — delivering more sustainable solutions at scale.

Avantor Innovation Centers

Avantor’s 14 Innovation Centers are technology-driven research and collaboration sites where our experts work closely with customers to overcome some of the most difficult scientific challenges and accelerate innovation at scale.

We reopened our flagship Bridgewater Innovation Center in New Jersey in 2024 after completing improvements that doubled previous laboratory and pilot plant capacity. This state-of-the-art, 60,000-square-foot facility focuses on customer-centric biopharma research, discovery and production, with a complete research and development ecosystem for scale-up simulations. Designed considering LEED certification requirements, this facility aims to reduce utility waste and streamline operations on-site.

Supporting sustainable lab transformation

Avantor’s on-site lab and production services teams bring deep expertise in customer operations, enabling us to support more sustainable lab practices. Avantor is a proud sponsor of My Green Lab, a nonprofit organization recognized as a global leader in laboratory sustainability best practices. To date, more than 600 Avantor associates have completed courses to become My Green Lab Ambassadors trained in sustainable laboratory practices. In 2024, Avantor assisted a customer’s participation in the My Green Lab Freezer Challenge that reduced the customer’s energy consumption by 3,241 kWh per day. We also supported a pilot program to reuse test tubes, and created an educational video content series called “Sustainability Snacks,” designed to show how small changes in daily lab habits can lead to significant improvements in lab sustainability.

Another lab process improvement introduced by Avantor in 2024 is the Avantor Virtual Assistant (AVA), which streamlines lab workflows through the automation of inventory management and generation of AI-powered insights, enhancing efficiency and compliance.
