Interleukin 4 (IL-4) is a type I cytokine produced by Th2 T cells, NK T cells, γ/δ T cells, eosinophils, mast cells, and activated basophils. IL-4 receptors are present on a number of cells, including hematopoietic, endothelial, epithelial, muscle, and brain tissues. IL-4 receptor engagement initiates signaling through the JAK/STAT pathway, and leads to the activation of PI3K and Ras/MAPK pathways (Nelms et al.). IL-4 plays a key role in immunoglobulin class switching in B cells and in regulating the differentiation of naïve T cells into T helper 2 (Th2) cells, while inhibiting Th1 differentiation. Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is also known as Colony stimulating factor 2 (granulocyte-macrophage), is a cytokine initially characterized by its ability to induce colonies of granulocytes and macrophages from myeloid progenitor cells, and is secreted by macrophages, T cells, mast cells, endothelial cells and fibroblasts. GM-CSF is a cytokine that functions as a white blood cell growth factor. GM-CSF stimulates stem cells to produce granulocytes (neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils) and monocytes. Monocytes exitthe circulation and migrate into tissue, whereupon they mature into macrophages and dendritic cells. Growth differentiation factor 11 (GDF-11) is a member of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) family. Persephin is a neurotrophic factor that belongs to the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) family. Persephin shares a large degree of structural similarity to GDNF, artemin, and neurturin, and has overall neuroprotective activity.
