This alpha factor pheromone arrests yeast in the G1 phase of their cell cycle. It helps to induces the expression of mating gene, changes in nuclear architecture and consequently polarizes the growth toward the mating partner.

STE2 encodes the presence of alpha factor pheromone receptor on mating type A cells in yeast.
