Zinc-alpha-2-glycoprotein (ZAG), first identified in the 1960s, derives its name from its precipitation from human plasma upon the addition of zinc salts. ZAG has since been found in secretory epithelial cells and in a range of body fluids. This antibody recognises a polypeptide of ~6.5 kDa, identified as Estrogen Inducible Protein pS2. The antibody's epitope is localized between amino acids 57-84. pS2 is a trefoil peptide. Trefoil peptides are protease resistant molecules secreted throughout the gut that play a role in mucosal healing. These peptides contain three intrachain disulfide bonds, forming the trefoil motif, or P-domain. Estrogen Inducible Protein pS2 is known to form dimers and this dimerization is thought to play a role in its protective and healing properties. About 60% of breast carcinomas are positive for estrogen inducible protein pS2. Staining is cytoplasmic, often with localization to the Golgi apparatus. It is shown to be localized in normal stomach mucosa, gastric fluid, goblet cells in the colon and small intestine, and in ulcerations of the gastrointestinal tract. The more recent virulent strain of H5N1 is now seen in Africa and Europe, as well as in southeast Asia. There is some evidence of human to human spread of this virus, but it is thought that the transmission efficiency was fairly low. HA interacts with cell surface proteins containing oligosaccharides with terminal sialyl residues. Virus isolated from a human infected with the H5N1 strain in 1997 could bind to oligosaccharides from human as well as avian sources, indicating its species-jumping ability. While efforts were made to use relatively conserved regions of the viral sequence as the antigen, the influenza virus genome has drifted somewhat from what was first reported.
