5-Bromo-4-Chloro-3-Indolyl-β-D-Galactopyranoside is used as indigogenic substrate for β-galactosidase, for detection of β-galactosidase-positive clones, and the identification of lac and bacterial colonies or phage plaques. It is the substrate of choice for blue-white selection of recombinant bacterial colonies with the lac+ genotype. X−Gal is cleaved by β−galactosidase to yield an insoluble blue precipitate. X−Gal is particularly useful in molecular biology applications to detect the activity of β−galactosidase which is frequently used as a reporter gene. In cloning, X−Gal is used to detect insertion of foreign DNA into the lacZ region of plasmid DNA using α-complementation which is based on vectors such as the pUC and the M13mp series that carry a fragment of the β-galactosidase gene encoding an α-fragment of β-galactosidase.

Hemagglutinin Monoclonal Antibody: Influenza A virus is a major public health threat, killing more than 30,000 people per year in the USA. Novel influenza virus strains caused by genetic drift and viral recombination emerge periodically to which humans have little or no immunity, resulting in devastating pandemics. Influenza A can exist in a variety of animals; however it is in birds that all subtypes can be found. These subtypes are classified based on the combination of the virus coat glycoproteins hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) subtypes. During 1997, an H5N1 avian influenza virus was determined to be the cause of death in 6 of 18 infected patients in Hong Kong. The more recent virulent strain of H5N1 is now seen in Africa and Europe, as well as in southeast Asia. There is some evidence of human to human spread of this virus, but it is thought that the transmission efficiency was fairly low. HA interacts with cell surface proteins containing oligosaccharides with terminal sialyl residues. Virus isolated from a human infected with the H5N1 strain in 1997 could bind to oligosaccharides from human as well as avian sources, indicating its species-jumping ability. While efforts were made to use relatively conserved regions of the viral sequence as the antigen, the influenza virus genome has drifted somewhat from what was first reported. However, this antibody was able to recognize peptides derrived from viruses from Indonesian human patients infected in 2007.

Glutathione is the major low molecular weight thiol compound of the living plant or animal cell. It is a tripeptide with a gamma peptide linkage between the amine group of cysteine (which is attached by normal peptide linkage to a glycine) and the carboxyl group of the glutamate side-chain. It is an antioxidant, preventing damage to important cellular components caused by reactive oxygen species such as free radicals and peroxides. The sulfhydryl (thiol) group (SH) of cysteine serves as a proton donor and is responsible for the biological activity of glutathione.

The maleimide group is more stable than the NHS-ester group, but will slowly hydrolyze and lose its reaction specificity for sulfhydryls at pH values > 7.5. It activates the sphingomyelin cycle. Brefeldin A mediated apoptosis has been observed in human tumor cells.
Brefeldin A reversibly inhibits the intracellular translocation of proteins in eukaryotes, e.g., during transport of proteins to the cell surface for secretion or expression. It has been reported to block the response of cultured cells to cholera toxin. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, causing a hyperpolarization of the membrane through the opening of a Cl− channel associated with the GABAA receptor (GABAA-R) subtype.
