It activates the sphingomyelin cycle. Brefeldin A mediated apoptosis has been observed in human tumor cells.
Brefeldin A reversibly inhibits the intracellular translocation of proteins in eukaryotes, e.g., during transport of proteins to the cell surface for secretion or expression.
