Ethyl acetoacetate is derived from ethanol.

It can be used as a diluent for improving cold flow properties of biodiesel from waste cooking oil and as an additive for activating Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles for efficient catalytic oxidation of aldehydes to carboxylic acids.
