Las cubetas de todas las capacidades estan diseñadas para los mejores resultados en espectrofotómetros o electroporadores. Las cubetas desechables o reutilizables estan compuestas de vidrio, plástico o cuarzo. Las cubetas pueden ser totalmente transparentes, chapadas en aluminio, o tener lados transparentes para guiar la luz a través del paso correcto. Las pequeñas cubetas rectangulares o cilíndricas permiten una fácil observación de absorción de UV o transformaciones celulares.
