Providing Local Responsiveness with Global Consistency

Avantor’s Devens, MA-Based Single-Use Fluid-Handling Hub

Avantor’s Devens, MA-Based Single-Use Fluid-Handling Hub | Avantor

Avantor recently launched a new integrated single-use fluid handling operations and logistics hub in Devens, MA, to meet growing single-use demand while supporting increasingly complex customization needs in the bioprocessing industry.

As demand for single-use bags, tubing and connectors continues to rise, biopharma manufacturers are under pressure to maintain supply continuity and scale efficiently. Ensuring timely access to sterilized assemblies is especially critical to keeping production on track. At the same time, customers moving from clinical to commercial scale often encounter compatibility and standardization challenges that can add unnecessary validation steps.

Avantor’s expanded capabilities in Devens were designed to address these pressures—providing reliable access to critical components and simplifying the path from development to full-scale manufacturing.

To support greater responsiveness and supply continuity, Avantor opened a 175,000-square-foot climate-controlled distribution center in Devens, MA, adjacent to the company’s single-use fluid-handling manufacturing facility. The site is designed to meet both current and future needs while improving operational flow, delivery efficiency and the speed with which Avantor can respond to customer needs.

“Avantor is creating a secure, redundant supply chain by co-locating fluid-handling manufacturing and distribution in Devens,” explained Rasheedia Aigoro, VP of Manufacturing Operations and Supply Chain with Avantor. “Our Operations, Quality, Design Engineering, and Product Management teams partner with our customers to understand their operations and provide critical components for their single-use assemblies to reduce lead times and support more reliable delivery.”

The Devens site is an important part of Avantor’s global fluid-handling network, designed to deliver consistent product quality and sterility worldwide while remaining responsive to regional needs. With a component library of 14,000 vendor-agnostic parts, Avantor delivers fully customized single-use solutions tailored to specific bioprocessing applications, including disposable skid systems with precision-engineered components that meet exact process requirements.

“The expanded facility complements Avantor’s existing manufacturing site by providing storage space for raw materials, as well as quality control and distribution capabilities, helping ensure consistent availability, on-time delivery and faster response to changing production requirements,” said Jim Eisner, Manager of Warehouse Operations.

Embedding Quality Controls in the Process Upfront

Avantor builds quality into every step of the single-use fluid-handling value chain by identifying and eliminating potential hazards upfront. “That means building ISO-classified cleanrooms with validated equipment, performing inspection and testing as required, and releasing product only with full traceability,” Keith Shanahan, Director of Quality for Avantor Fluid Handling, explained.

Operational enhancements at the Devens, MA site include ISO-7-certified cleanrooms and validated aseptic processes, supported by digitized batch records and upcoming AI-driven inspection capabilities to enhance accuracy and traceability. The facility’s engineering footprint has also been expanded to allow rapid scale-up, with design, quality and operations teams co-located to accelerate customization and responsiveness to customer requirements.

Together, Avantor’s integrated Devens manufacturing and distribution hub represents a powerful network of expertise and precision, bringing together quality specialists, engineers, customer service representatives, material handlers, and clean room technicians. This integrated team ensures every product meets the highest standards and reaches customers with reliability and care.
