About this item
This experiment introduces students to Southern blotting as a tool for DNA fingerprinting in a hypothetical paternity determination. DNA fragments are first separated by agarose gel electrophoresis, then transferred to a nylon membrane and finally visualised by staining.
- For 5 lab groups
- Electrophoresis 45 minutes, blotting overnight, staining and destaining 10 minutes
Also required: Electrophoresis tank and power supply, 65 °C water batch, DNA visualisatoin system, staining net and tray, automatic micropipettes, lab glassware, microwave oven, distilled water, NaCl, NaOH, concentrated HCl, plastic wrap, and forceps.
Delivery: Kit includes instructions, DNA samples for electrophoresis, practice gel loading solution, UltraSpec-Agarose, electrophoresis buffer, pipettes, 5 precut nylon membranes, 5 precut blotting filter papers, and Blue-Blot DNA stain.
