Newborn Calf Serum (NBCS) originates from 3 to 10 day old calves. It is a high quality, cost effective replacement for Foetal Bovine Serum (FBS) and contains a somewhat higher proportion of proteins and immunoglobulin, but fewer growth factors. With proper cell adaptation, it has been shown to perform very well in cell culture applications where routine cell growth and cell culture maintenance is the objective.

Ham's F12 was originally developed for the serum-free clonal growth of Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells, lung cells and mouse L-cells.
