Dual-layer cartridges are high-capacity cartridges that combine a prefiltration layer with a selective postfiltration layer. Each layer is a separate gradient-density filter, which reduces larger particles on the outer layers and finer particles on the inner layers. Ideal for removing a broad range of deformable and nondeformable particles such as sand, silt, sludge, rust and scale.

This design has a holding capacity that is two to three times traditional spun or wound designs. Catridges are made of bacteria and chemical-resistant polypropylene; suitable to 145 °F (63 °C). These cartridges are certified to NSF Standard 42 for materials.
