Cell biology is a branch of biology that studies the structure, functions and actions of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. Among the topics studied in cell biology are cell composition, how cells form and divide, cell metabolism, cell communication, cell cycles and biochemistry.
Because cells are a fundamental unit of life, the science of cell biology is a basis for all biological science and is essential for research into cancer and other diseases, as well as for all biological sciences. Cell biology studies the general properties that are common to most cells, as well as the unique features of specialized cells that perform distinct functions.
Cell biology includes cell culture and cellular analysis.
