DPX new is a synthetic non aqueous mounting medium for microscopy. In its formulation, the teratogenic plasticiizer dibutyl phthalate (DBP) has been avoided, which renders the composition safer for the environment and more user friendly than the conventionally used mounting agents such as DPX.

Accurate analytic results in UV/Vis and infrared spectroscopy depend on the use of very pure solvents for sample preparation. The Uvasol® solvents range has been specially designed for spectroscopy and other applications requiring solvents of the highest spectral purity. The refinement process allows a greater degree of security in applications and avoids misinterpretation of analytical results caused by traces of UV, IR and fluorescence contamination. Uvasol® solvents offer best UV transmittance. In all specifications the minimum transmittance for five typical wavelengths are identified. Potassium bromide is transparent from the near UV to long wave IR wavelengths. In IR-spectroscopy, solid samples which are difficult to melt or dissolve in any suitable IR-transmitting solvent, are analysed by grinding with potassium bromide powder, and pressing into a disc. This procedure has a high quality demand of the used potassium bromide. Potassium bromide Uvasol® is adjusted to a mean particle size of 150 μm. This is sufficient for the preparation of perfectly good pellets without the need for further pre-treatment and the associated risk of contamination. It also retains its powdery form over a period of years if stored in an airtight condition. Its physical suitability for pelletising is checked by a special application test and its chemical purity established by full spectrum FT-IR analysis.

Chromogenic media offer a method for rapid identification of characteristic bacterial enzymes. Merck offers a wide range of solid and liquid culture media that also permits the fluorescence detection of E. coli under the trade name Fluorocult®. Fluorocult® culture media have the same components as the standard media and additionally the substrate MUG. Some of the media also contain tryptophan as the substrate for a possible indole reaction to further confirm E. coli presence. The Fluorocult® method can produce a positive result within just 24 to 48 hours. In the case of the chromogenic media, a direct identification, using the characteristic colony colouring on the culture medium itself is possible without the application of further additives. A differentiation of positive single colonies is possible, even when high microbial counts are present.
