Fibroblast growth factor 16 (FGF-16) is a heparin-binding member of the FGF family. FGFs possess broad mitogenic and cell survival activities and are expressed during embryonic development. FGFs act primarily on cells of mesodermal and neuroectodermal origin to regulate diverse physiological functions including angiogenesis, cell growth, pattern formation, embryonic development, metabolic regulation, cell migration, and tissue repair (Goldfarb; Green et al.). In vitro, FGF-16 has been shown to promote the proliferation of brown adipocytes and in rat embryos it is predominantly expressed in these cells. FGF-16 has also been shown to play a critical role in embryonic heart development and is thought to play a cardioprotective role after birth (Hotta et al.; Lu et al.; Wang et al.).

Glutathione is the major low molecular weight thiol compound of the living plant or animal cell. It is a tripeptide with a gamma peptide linkage between the amine group of cysteine (which is attached by normal peptide linkage to a glycine) and the carboxyl group of the glutamate side-chain. It is an antioxidant, preventing damage to important cellular components caused by reactive oxygen species such as free radicals and peroxides. The sulfhydryl (thiol) group (SH) of cysteine serves as a proton donor and is responsible for the biological activity of glutathione.
Glutathione suppresses human immunodeficiency virus expression in chronically infected monocytic cells. It is a useful tripeptide involved in many aspects of metabolism, including transport of g-glutanyl amino acids and reductive cleavage of disulfide bonds.

Histone deacetylase (HDAC) and histone acetyltransferase (HAT) are enzymes that regulate transcription by selectively deacetylating or acetylating the eta-amino groups of lysines located near the amino termini of core histone proteins (1). Eight members of HDAC family have been identified in the past several years (2,3). These HDAC family members are divided into two classes, I and II. Class I of the HDAC family comprises four members, HDAC-1, 2, 3, and 8, each of which contains a deacetylase domain exhibiting from 45 to 93% identity in amino acid sequence. Class II of the HDAC family comprises HDAC-4, 5, 6, and 7, the molecular weights of which are all about two-fold larger than those of the class I members, and the deacetylase domains are present within the C-terminal regions, except that HDAC-6 contains two copies of the domain, one within each of the N-terminal and C-terminal regions. Human HDAC-1, 2 and 3 were expressed in various tissues, but the others (HDAC-4, 5, 6, and 7) showed tissue-specific expression patterns (3). These results suggested that each member of the HDAC family exhibits a different, individual substrate specificity and function in vivo. HDAC8 interacts with PEPB2-MYH11, a fusion protein consisting of the 165 N-terminal residues of CBF-beta (PEPB2) with the tail region of MYH11 produced by the inversion Inv(16)(p13q22), a translocation associated with acute myeloid leukemia of M4EO subtype. The PEPB2-MYH1 fusion protein also interacts with RUNX1, a well known transcriptional regulator, suggesting that the interaction with HDAC8 may participate to convert RUNX1 into a constitutive transcriptional repressor.

Indian hedgehog (IHH) is one of three proteins in the hedgehog family which includes sonic hedgehog and desert hedgehog. Hedgehog proteins are important signaling molecules, acting through patched and smoothened receptors. During embryonic development, they are expressed in the fetal lung, gut, stomach, liver, kidney, and pancreas. Interleukin 13 (IL-13) is a type I cytokine, and signals through type I cytokine receptors to activate JAK/STAT and IRS-1/IRS-2 pathways. IL-13 is produced by T cells and innate lymphoid cells (Pulendran and Artis) and it inhibits production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, prostaglandins, and reactive oxygen and nitrogen species by monocytes and macrophages (Hershey). Unlike human B cells, IL-13 has no effect on mouse B cell development and function. IL-13 promotes eosinophil survival, activation, and recruitment, and also activates mast cells (Hershey). IL-13 regulates gastrointestinal parasite expulsion, airway hyperresponsiveness, allergic inflammation, tissue eosinophilia, goblet cell hyperplasia, intracellular parasitism, tissue remodeling, tumor cell growth, and fibrosis. Interleukin 33 (IL-33) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine from the IL-1 family. It binds to the ST2 receptor and activates NF-kB and MAPK pathways.
