JB-4 is a water-soluble, GMA based, plastic resin kit intended for use in the preparation of embedded samples for high resolution light microscopy. It is a technique now widely used for research and clinical diagnosis. JB-4 yields semi-thin sections (0.5μ-2μ) with excellent morphological preservation.

When sectioning frozen tissue for rapid surgical biopsy diagnosis or for research (typically in Histochemistry), the tissue sample must be firmly attached to the microtome stage or chuck. Embedding material such as OCT are preferred as these also provide a supportive and protective aid to sectioning.

Spurr resin is a hydrophobic resin. It is less viscous than epon mixtures and is easier to dispense. The low viscosity of the resin contributes to its penetration in tissue, mineral and dense structures. A low viscosity of 60 cps also allows easy penetration into a variety of difficult materials.

PolyFreeze is a water-soluble support matrix and a form of embedding medium for frozen sectioning. PolyFreeze sections flawlessly at routine frozen specimen thickness of 5-6 μ and leaves no slide residue. It provides for -20 ºC cryostat sectioning in rapid set embedment. This medium freezes quickly supporting the tissue for sectioning at 3 mm and up with no cracking of the matrix at temperatures from -8 °C to -25 °C.

Silver nitrate along with iodine are among several inorganic substances used to induce colour in microscopical preparations. Silver nitrate as a biological stain exploits the strong colors of colloidal metallic silver. Silver nitrate is an important component of the silver staining that is used for the detection of proteins separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Silver nitrate is a component of the silver stain kit. It is required for image development in diamine as well as non-diamine silver staining.

Eosin Y, also known as Eosin yellowish is a widely used xanthene dye. It is a counterstain that is used to distinguish between various connective tissue fibers and matrices, and the cytoplasm of different types of cells. Eosin in combination with hematoxylin is useful to demonstrate the general histological architecture of a tissue.

Carbocyanine dyes with long hydrocarbon chains have low fluorescence in aqueous phase, but become highly fluorescent upon binding to lipid bilayers, making this class of dyes ideal for staining cell membranes. Carbocyanine dye membrane staining is very stable, with minimal dye transfer between cells. Dilinoleyl carbocynaine dyes have much faster lateral diffusion rates than regular carbocyanine dyes, which facilitates labelling of neurons in tissues.
