Soda-lime glass test tubes are suitable for general mixing and simple laboratory work, and will withstand moderate warming (water bath). They should not be placed directly into naked flames.

Neutral glass test tubes will withstand moderate temperature change, they should not be taken from cold and placed directly into the hottest part of the flame without pre-heating.
