Microbiological laboratories need a simple procedure to maintain important microorganisms rather than repetitive sub-culturing, which results in contaminated cultures, loss of viability and, even more importantly, loss of original characteristics by introducing biochemical and genetic changes. Cryoinstant consists of 25 porous beads in a vial filled with a broth containing glycerol. Microorganisms will bind to the porous surface of the beads. The excess broth is aspirated, and the vials stored at temperatures down to –70 °C in a freezer.

The SLYM-BARTs can be used as a P/A test capable of indicating to some extent the possible population size and the types of slime-forming organisms present in the water sample. Slime-forming bacteria are able to produce copious amounts of slime without necessarily having to use any iron. Iron bacteria also produce slime, but usually it is thinner and involves the accumulation of various forms of iron. BART biodetectors are excellent diagnostic tools to help identify the presence of process disruptors, such as bacteria creating slime layers and limiting disinfection.

Serratia species are implicated in nosocomial infections. In several countries, Serratia marcescens is frequently associated with epidemics in intensive care units and in particular in neonatal and pediatric units. Surveillance of nosocomial infections requires effective recovery of clinical isolates from faeces, wound exudates and respiratory samples to prevent problems of cross infection and potentially fatal infections.
