Giemsa's staining is one of the standard procedures in histology, hematology, cytology and bacteriology. The Giemsa's azur-eosin-methylene blue dye is a dry dye that is used for the preparation of a staining solution. This solution can be used for the staining of blood and bone marrow smears, paraffin sections, spirochaets and clinical-cytological specimens of human origin.

Most mucins contain serveral glycoproteins and can therefore be detected by stains for carbohydrates. Best carmine stain is specifically used for glycogens. Mucicarmine is an empirical stain. When applied for fungal staining, it stains the spores and hyphae as pale to dark red.

Gram’s iodine solution is used as a mordant in the Gram staining process. It is added after the primary staining step with crystal violet; the resultant crystal violet - Iodine complex imparts purple color to the cells.

Ethidium bromide solution is a fluorescent stain for visualising nucleic acids in solution or in electrophoresis gels. The solution is provided at a concentration of 0,625 mg/ml. A final working concentration of 0,5 g/ml is easily obtained by adding one drop of solution to 50 ml of molten agarose, running buffer or staining buffer. Ethidium bromide solution in dropper bottles may be stored at room temperature for up to one year.
