Tetrazolium blue chloride (BTC) is a colorless tetrazolium compound that upon reduction forms a colored diformazan. The reactivity has been applied to the analysis of reducing compounds including the nanomolar detection of reducing sugars and carbidopa and methyldopa. BTC has been used for histological staining of mouse coronal brain sections and rat brain sections. In combination with 4-nitrocatechol, tetrazolium blue chloride forms a ternary complex with molybdenum(VI) for extraction and spectrophotometric determination of molybdenum. It has also been used to stain Francisella tularensis cells for tularemic microagglutination test.

Xylenol orange tetrasodium salt is a fluorochrome acid dye with complexing and chelating properties that make it useful as an indicator in the spectrophotometric detection and assay of metal ions such as calcium, cadmium, bismuth, zinc, lead, and mercury. Its tetrasodium salt especially is used as an indicator in metal titrations. It changes color from yellow to red between pH 6.4 to 10.4. It has six potentially anionic substituents, one being sulfonate, and is anionic under staining conditions and during most laboratory applications.

Ponceau S is the sodium salt of a diazo dye. It is used to make a stain for rapid reversible staining of protein bands on nitrocellulose or PVDF membranes (Western blots) and also for staining protein on cellulose acetate membranes. The stain is reversed with water washes and aids in subsequent immunological detection. The following are two common stain formulations: 0.1% Ponceau S (w/v) in 5% acetic acid 2% Ponceau S (w/v) in 30% TCA, 30% sulfosalicylic acid.
