Merck tilbyder et bredt udvalg af dyrkningsmedier på fast og flydende form, som også muliggør fluorescenspåvisning af E. coli under varemærket Fluorocult®. Fluorocult® dyrkningsmedier har de samme komponenter som standardmedier og derudover substratet MUG. Nogle af medierne indeholder også tryptofan som substrat med henblik på en mulig indol-reaktion for yderligere bekræftelse af forekomsten af E. coli. Fluorocult® metoden kan give et positivt resultat inden for bare 24-48 timer. I forbindelse med kromogene medier er en direkte identifikation ved hjælp af kolonifarvning på selve dyrkningsmediet mulig uden anvendelse af yderligere tilsætningsstoffer. En differentiering af positive enkeltkolonier er mulig, selv ved forekomst af høje mikrobielle tællinger.

4-Aminophenyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside is a substrate for beta-galactosidase. It is also a weak beta-D-galactosidase inducer and can be used in affinity chromatography for isolation of galactose-binding. The 4-aminophenyl releases upon cleavage by beta-galactosidase. It can then be assayed by electro-oxidation to 4-imino quinone while recording changes in the potential or current galvanic system.
