Sodium bicarbonate is used as part of a buffering system commonly used to maintain physiological pH 7,2 to 7,4 in a culture environment
Bicarbonate is a weak buffer with that makes maintaining a pH range of 7,2 to 7,6 somewhat difficult, but it is non-toxic, and is a nutrient source.
