Før hver analyse skal man bruge brydningsindeksstandarder til at kontrollere refraktometerets præcision ved evaluering af sukkerindhold. De kendte koncentrationer vil bekræfte en nul-basisaflæsning, så efterfølgende aflæsninger kan sammenlignes korrekt for produktionskonsistens. Sukroseopløsninger evaluerer enheder, der ikke kræver kontrolleret temperatur, mens kalibreringsolier tester instrumenter, der kræver specifikke niveauer. Brydningsindeksstandarder sikrer, at kunderne modtager nøjagtige Brix-skalarapporter fra fødevareindustrien.
