Typisk bruger de vand til forsigtigt at påføre varme på de indesluttede prøver, men olie og perler bruges også, når der kræves forhøjede temperaturer eller mere effektive metoder. Badene kan leveres med låg for at forhindre varme i at slippe ud og forhindre kontaminering udefra.
