Formålet med HPLC-pumper er at opretholde en konstant strøm af mobil fase gennem HPLC’en uanset det tryk, der skyldes strømningsmodstanden i den pakkede kolonne. De fleste kommercielle HPLC-pumper er baseret på et design med en reciprokerende stempel. HPLC-pumper kan bruges til at blande eller kombinere den mobile fase samt levere den til systemet. Deres funktion er at reducere separationstiden for store kolonnapakninger og muliggøre brug af pakkematerialer med mindre partikelstørrelser.
