Centrifuger genererer den hurtige rotationskraft, der er nødvendig for at adskille blandingers indhold med forskellige densiteter. Partikler og stoffer med lav densitet stiger til overfladen, mens de tungere komponenter samler sig i bunden. Centrifuger fås som kompakte bord- og mikrocentrifuger eller som større gulvmodeller tilpasset ethvert arbejdsområde samt forskellige plade- og prøverørstørrelser.
