Polymyxin B sulphate is a mixture of Polymyxin B1 and Polymyxin B2 sulphate, obtained from Bacillus polymyxia strains. Polymyxin B inhibits gram-negative organisms in vitro wherein it binds to and interferes with the permeability of the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane and is also reported to inhibit Ca²⁺ dependent protein kinase C (PKC). Effective concentration is typically 50 mg/l.
